India was ruled by the British for almost 200 years. During this period several Viceroys were appointed by the British crown. Lord Canning (1856 – 1862) was the last Governor General and first Viceroy of India. Lord Mountbatten (March 1947 – August 1947) was the last Viceroy of British India. He was also the First Governor General of free India. During the tenure of Lord Mountbatten India got independence. Lord Mountbatten was succeeded by C. Rajagopalachari who was the first and the last Indian Governor General of free India.
Among the British Viceroys in India Lord Mayo(1869 – 1872) was the only one to be murdered in office by a convict in the Andamans in 1872.
